Requiem for a German Shepherd
Requiem
I once had a dog
A large rather ugly
German Shepherd dog
She was quite an anachronism
Because although she was enormous
And very clumsy
She tried desperately
To make those she loved
Regard her as
A small Chic
Svelte
Tidy
Dog
To her enemies
Strange doorbell ringers
Stray dogs watering the rosebushes
Self-confident salesmen with greasy smiles
She was Nemesis
Standing 10 feet tall
Those who broke with us
Were her friends for eternity
Her eyes were very wise and very sad
I am sure she knew she was
the wrong colour
The wrong shape
The wRong size
I am glad we made her feel
Most of the time anyway
She really was
A small
Svelte
Chic
Tidy
Dog
